New Core Content Area: Creation
We want our students to communicate what they create and we want them to follow their own direction. How do we do that?
Like Google’s 20% time, students need to be given opportunities to create, to design, to build. Offering time for students to develop their passions and interests and to share their creations is the new content for the classroom. It’s not about teaching content, but it’s a chance for students to create new content.
Rules of creation:
We all love creation.
Creativity needs direction.
Creativity loves restraint.
Take time out and put time in for students to create. When students have finished their assigned work very well, they have the ability to create something new for the class they are in. They take their free time and build something that is publication quality for their class. We will also put time into class for the students to be creative with what we are studying. Like we said before, we want the students to develop and follow their own passions and interests and then share their creations.
We, Amy and Bob are going to use this in our classes this year. Amy teaches third grade in Hong Kong and Bob teaches 11th and 12th graders outside Yosemite. We are going to share our creations across the Pacific Ocean and with anyone who wants to view or use.
